Light bulbs have been around for centuries. These little pieces of glass and wiring have given us a way to see things and keep on living even when the sun goes down. This little invention has changed the way humans used to live and nowadays it is such a common thing that we don’t even think twice before switching it on and off. But no matter how old this invention gets there is no denying that there was a time before the lightbulb and modern electricity was invented and people didn’t really have much of an option other than to stop doing whatever that they were doing once the sun went down.

Light is a natural gift, it is present in different forms and it works in different ways. The primary form of light is the sun, it not only provides us with the necessary amount of light we as humans need to survive but it also gives us heat and vitamins that help us stay healthy. Another well known and used form of light and heat is fire. Nowadays fire is a thing of the past, as all cooking is being shifted to electric stoves instead of traditional open fire stoves. Still, fire is a very important source of light and heat and people of the past have used it for a long time. It was their form of protection from the animals of the wild before they started making weapons. It was also a way to warn off people of other tribes and the only source for cooking food.

So how did we go from living in caves and using sunlight and fire to using electricity to light up our bulbs and start living life at night time? Well, it wasn’t a small journey. It took humans centuries to reach where we are today. In today’s age, we have all sorts of means of light. We have fixed light bulbs, we have portable torches and we even have regenerative forms of generating electricity that can light up our homes. Today we can make our houses look and feel no different than daytime with just a pish of two or three buttons. We have been successful in making newer and much more concentrated forms of light that are able to provide more illumination.

But this journey began with the story of one man known as Thomas Alva Edison. A person who was considered unfit mentally to study in the same school as his peers. This guy can be credited for a lot of our modern-day luxuries. Thomas Edison is responsible for the phonograph, the motion picture camera and he also made some major but subtle improvisations to telephones and telegraphs. The man was a pure genius and an extraordinary treasure who contributed to making this world a better and more liveable place. His invention of the incandescent light bulb helped in altering the way people live, providing them a better option to be more productive at night.

The modern-day bulb is very different from its predecessor. It is no longer a round glass that emits yellow light. Today there are many different options to choose from the most common being LED bulbs. These bulbs are not only smaller but they also produce more illumination and consume less power.
